Classic Chocolate Tiramisu

Classic Chocolate Tiramisu

Want a crowd-pleasing dessert that won't tie you to the kitchen all day? This rich, creamy, and deeply indulgent, chocolate tiramisu is a decadent twist on the classic Italian dessert. Traditional tiramisu relies on raw egg yolks whipped into mascarpone and egg whites for volume.
This eggless version achieves the exact same light, luxurious mousse consistency using mascarpone cheese, heavy cream, and powdered sugar. Pairing dark Dutch-processed cocoa powder directly with warm espresso creates a deeply flavorful mocha soak that elevates every layer.

Prep Time & Yield

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes

  • Chilling Time: 6 hours (Overnight recommended)

  • Servings: 8–10 slices

  • Dish Size: 9x9-inch square baking dish

Ingredients

Mocha Dip

  • 1 ½ cups (360 ml) Freshly brewed strong espresso or extra-strong coffee

  • 2 tbsp Unsweetened Dutch-processed cocoa powder

  • 1 tbsp Granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp Vailla extract

Eggless Mousse Filling

  • 8 oz (226g) Mascarpone cheese or full fat cream cheese

  • 2/3 cup (75g) Powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar), sifted

  • 2 cup (480ml) Heavy whipping cream

  • 1 tsp Pure vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup Dark chocolate chopped, melted and cooled

  • Assembly & Garnish

  • 20–24(7 oz) Italian Savoiardi ladyfingers strebrought or homemade

  • 2 tbsp Unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Mocha Dip

In a wide, shallow bowl, whisk the warm espresso, cocoa powder, vanilla, and granulated sugar together until completely dissolved. Set the liquid aside to cool completely to room temperature before assembling.

2. Whip the Heavy Cream

In a chilled mixing bowl, combine the cold heavy whipping cream, 1/3 cup of the sifted powdered sugar, and the vanilla extract. Beat using an electric mixer on medium-high speed until medium-firm peaks form. Place the bowl in the refrigerator to keep cold.

3. Beat the Mascarpone Base

In a separate bowl, combine the mascarpone cheese or cream cheese with the remaining 1/3 cup of sifted powdered sugar. Beat on low speed for just 30 to 45 seconds until smooth and combined. Fold in the melted chocolate until just combined.

4. Fold the Filling

Gently fold one-third of your whipped heavy cream into the mascarpone mixture to lighten the base. Add the remaining whipped cream and the ¼ cup of fine chocolate shavings. Use a rubber spatula to fold with broad, gentle strokes until smooth, light, and streak-free.

5. Dip the Ladyfingers

Quickly dunk each Savoiardi ladyfinger into the cooled mocha liquid—just about 1 second per side.

6. Layer the Tiramisu

  • Layer 1: Line the bottom of your baking dish with a neat row of dipped ladyfingers.

  • Layer 2: Spread half of the chocolate mascarpone cream evenly across the ladyfinger layer.

  • Layer 3: Dust a thin, even layer of cocoa powder over the cream using a fine-mesh sieve.

  • Layer 4: Add a second layer of dipped ladyfingers (aligning them perpendicular to the first layer for stability when slicing).

  • Layer 5: Top with the remaining mascarpone cream and smooth the surface with an offset spatula.

7. Chill to Set

Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, though 8 to 12 hours (overnight) yields the best texture. This rest allows the ladyfingers to absorb moisture from the cream and transform into a soft, cake-like layer.

8. Dust and Serve

Right before serving, dust the top generously with the remaining cocoa powder.

Notes:
  • Don't Soak the Biscuits: Savoiardi ladyfingers act like sponges. A swift dunk prevents pooling at the bottom of your dish and keeps the layers clean.

  • Sift the Powdered Sugar: Always sift your powdered sugar before mixing to avoid tiny clumps in your smooth mascarpone filling.

  • Use Dutch-Processed Cocoa: Dutch cocoa is neutralized of acidity, giving your mocha soak and top dusting a darker color and richer chocolate taste
